Top 10: Star Wars Games

As we eagerly count down the hours, minutes and seconds till we get to return to that galaxy far, far away we here at Link-Cable decided to take a moment and look back at the best games to ever grace the Star Wars universe.

10 – Star Wars: Shadows of The Empire

Let’s get things started with a true classic. Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire was a Nintendo 64 launch game that showed just how much the new console would change gaming forever. You are Dash Rendar, mercenary for hire and hero of the rebellion on a mission to expose the scheming of the nefarious Prince Xixor. Where the game truly excelled was in showing how different gameplay styles would work in this new third dimension, from flight combat, to ground missions to speeder races… ok maybe not that last one.

9 – Star Wars Trilogy (Arcade)

Being able to relive the best moments of the original Star Wars Trilogy has always been an important playing Star Wars video games and this was on full display with the Arcade version. Here players could relive the battles of Yavin, Hoth and Endor as long as their tokens last out. Take it from me, if you find one of these in an arcade play it until your broke.

8 – Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

From the moment we first saw Luke fire up his lightsaber in A New Hope I’m sure we’ve all shared the dream of being a Jedi… or a Sith. In The Force Unleashed you can wield all the ‘forbidden’ powers of the Force, from lighting up foes with bolts of electricity to snapping necks with a flick of the wrist allowing you to truly use the Force to its full potential and it was nothing but good fun.

7 – Star Wars: Battlefront II

Now you wanna talk about fun? Battlfront II gave fans of the original everything they wanted and more. More maps, more weapons more… everything, this was the Star Wars: Battlefront game that everyone wanted. It’s a shame that Battelfront III never saw the light of day (as well as several other games) because the way things were going, it could have ended up as number one on this list.

6  – LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga

Maybe not as ‘serious’ as other games on our list but LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga perfectly echoes the fun and adventure that made the movies so famous in the first place. Playing with LEGO pieces was a big part of my childhood, especially building Star Wars brand sets and being able to take that fun and experience it all again in video game form was pure bliss.

5 – Star Wars: Empire at War

From the folks would brought you Command & Conquer comes one of the greatest real-time strategy games of all time. Empire at War perfectly blended fast based ground battles with more strategic space combat. And the best part? Both worked together extremely well together to give the game a sense of scale that was uncommon in strategy games at the time.

4 – Super Star Wars

Ah man, remember that awesome scene in A New Hope when Luke battled the Sand Crawler? That was SO cool. Ok maybe Super Star Wars takes some… creative liberties with the Star Wars canon but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. I had a hard time deciding which of the ‘Super’ Star Wars  games to put on the list but in the end chose the original just for how novel it was.

3 – Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader

My personal favorite game on this list, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader is a game I poured hundreds and hundreds into, perfecting my runs and going for those elusive gold medals. Everything from the buttery smooth controls, to the sharp visuals and the engrossing gameplay makes this a game that any fan of Star Wars needs to play.

2 – Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Dark Forces

Of all the games that have come out bearing the Star Wars name, the Dark Forces / Jedi Knight series would be the one that best exemplifies what it means to be a Star Wars hero. As Kyle Katarn you will do everything from battle imperial forces as a gunsligner to a Jedi Knight fighting evil and in doing so, you completed one of the greatest personal Star Wars stories of all time.

1 – Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

If Dark Forces tells the best personal story in all of Star Wars then Knights of the Old Republic tells the most grand. On this sweeping adventure you will travel across the galaxy on a mission to either save it, or conquer it. Story telling in games hit a new high point in Knights of the Old Republic and it’s influence is still being felt across multiple genres thanks to BioWare’s The Old Republic MMO and their Mass Effect series.
